Poll: 59-percent favor legalized marijuana

Marquette University Law School Poll

MILWAUKEE, WI (MetroSource-WSAU)  A new poll is finding strong support for Governor Tony Evers' agenda. The Marquette University Law School poll released Thursday found that voters backed many of the Democratic governor's positions on health care, school funding, the minimum wage, and criminal justice reform.

The poll also asked about marijuana legalization in Wisconsin. 59-percent of those surveyed favored allowing marijuana use for recreational purposes. Evers has suggested a statewide referendum, and said he would sign such a bill if it has public support. Evers also favors marijuana for medical use, which was blocked by former governor Scott Walker.

Respondents also said they would favor higher taxes to increase funding for public education.

55-percent were in favor of state money for K-12 education. 52-percent were opposed to higher taxes to pay for roads and transportation needs.

Also from the survey:
  • 55-percent of respondents favored an increase in Wisconsin’s minimum wage.
  • 62-percent favored accepting federal money to expand BadgerCare.
  • 72-percent said Wisconsin’s political districts should be drawn by a non-partisan commission instead of by politicians.
The survey also asked several questions about Donald Trump. His job approval rating was 44-percent. 51-percent said they were opposed to a border wall, and 43-percent said the President is mostly to blame for the current government shutdown.

The survey questioned 800 people by phone last week. It has a margin of error between 3.9 and 5.5-percent.
