Legalize recreational marijuana on Guam

Lynn Wolf

Approving recreational marijuana use in Guam will have many long-lasting benefits. By far the most relevant consideration should be economic. Many other communities have found a way to manage and profit from recreational marijuana programs.

Already a recreational marijuana tourism plan is in talks with Japan. Prison overcrowding and law enforcement will save thousands of dollars annually. And let’s face it — there always has been and always will be a behind-the-scenes, thriving market for marijuana.

Recreational marijuana use in Guam would be the boost in economy that is so badly needed to fund local projects. Our schools are in disrepair, some roads are close to undrivable, the public hospital needs funds, infrastructure such as the power stations need updating, homeland security costs are expected to rise, homeless and the working poor need assistance. The list goes on and on.

The funding brought in through taxes ... will fund generations of people here on Guam. The potential income is limitless.

The economic and reported health benefits from responsible consumption seem to far outweigh the potential low risks. Please don’t pass up this opportunity to lead the way for a progressive and responsible plan to make recreational marijuana accessible and profitable.
