Cannabis SHOULD be legalised, say readers

By Laura Gooderham

Readers have their say on our poll of whether or not cannabis should be legalised.

New research into the effects of cannabis on the body has found that it could help to reduce, or even reverse, memory loss and other brain ageing effects in older people.

So should it be legalised?

A total of 35 per cent of readers said that cannabis should be legalised for certain users but an overwhelming 57 per cent said yes to all uses.

Only eight per cent said no, cannabis should not be made legal.

Readers also expressed their views on this topic:
A_Turtle said: "Lots of thumbs down from people who think they know it all. The 'I've only been wrong once and that was when I thought I was' brigade. Never used it and only read about the worst of the abusers, consequently unable to present properly considered facts to support their side of the discussion."

Speedyboy added: "It's not your memory loss, it's that after a joint you just don't care as much."

A_Turtle posted: "Dhutre, what have amphetamines got to do with anything? Likewise whether or not Lemon_drop does use them? However, they are far more damaging than hash or weed (resin or herbal marijuana). Unitedforever is almost right. Used in moderation, cannabis is less harmful than alcohol. It is quite probable that a person who used cannabis to excess also abused alcohol as the effects as regards the feeling of intoxication is very similar.

"Talking to a long term abuser is no indication that they only used, or abused, one of them. I talk quite frequently to a person who used cannabis for over 20 years, only giving up when he gave up tobacco. He does very well in the pub quizzes that we take part in from time to time and scores well above average for his 67 years on IQ tests.

"All things in moderation. After all, Conium maculatam (hemlock) is a deadly poison in not very large doses. However, used in moderation it is a very effective neurosedative used in some cases of epilepsy and other neurologically induced spasms, very severe effects of teething in infants, cramps and as an antidote in cases of strychnine poisoning."

Unitedforever added: "Used in moderation causes no harm, just like alcohol. It's only when its abused that causes problems. The best thing to come from legalising cannabis would be the revenue it would create, also free the polie from petty crime."

Gr1msb0y posted: "Clearly, as Michael Gove once said, this country still had enough of experts. Why pay attention to research from respected scientists when you can rely on the tried and trusted snap judgements of dhutre and lemon_drop?"

Dhutre added: "I don't think lemon_drop does Billy. Have you ever spoken to an old cannabis addict?
Talk to them at any time of the day and it's like talking to someone on their way out of the pub late at night. They always strike me as being brain impaired."

Billyliar said: "Check your research lemon_drop. You are very sadly out of touch."

Lemon_drop posted: "Because all stoners struggle to find words and thoughts and I'm surprised they ever stumble their way home with that slanted grin across their face. Low-dose treatment with cannabis for stoners? Don't make me laugh, low-dose, give them the bush and they'd want another."
