Latest finding of a study by the American Psychological Association (APA) has established a positive link between teen marijuana use psychosis. According to the study, adolescents who used marijuana were at a greater risk of developing psychotic disorders. Initial findings of the study had found no link between using pot and mental illness. After being rebuked, further research was initiated by the scientists.

The study has found that the risk was higher for marijuana users who are male. North Carolina Family Policy Council’s counsel Jere Royall stated that their group has been following studies by established bodies like American Medical Association and the American Academy of Pediatrics. Further he added that latest study by APA has confirmed the fears of harmful effects of marijuana. As a result, the group continues its opposition to laws regarding cannabis legalization.

Recreational Use of Marijuana Is Harmful
Short-term and long-term mental problems have been linked to marijuana usage by many studies and especially if used in teen years. States permitting recreational use of marijuana need to keep these factors in mind as it was harmful to the adolescents.

Ignacio Almazan, Executive Director, National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws, North Carolina said that unbiased data should be made available listing the harmful impacts of using pot. The group plans to would advocate the same to the public.

He said that until the people are not educated of the adverse impact, it will not be easy to oppose usage. Moreover, they are not in favor of pot use among teenagers but the decision has to be made by the people themselves.

NIDA Research On Drug Consumption
Meanwhile, another research initiated by the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) has indicated that almost 15% school-going kids from Grade 8 have consumed marijuana and 1% is into the daily consumption of the drug.

This can have quite a negative impact on the society as the drug use has been related to a sense of relaxation in the beginning but can end into depression, stress, panic, distrust and other cognitive disabilities that can do a lasting damage. The age and dosage were an important factor to be considered when decided on the pros and cons of pot usage in the society for purposes other than the medicinal use of the drug.
