Judging by the lyrics of many of our dancehall tunes, the key ingredient to being a bedroom dynamo is some high-grade ganja. Pair your herb with your favourite brew and, in the words of Rodney Pryce, you'll have "the tonic to leave the girls dem astonished".
Jamaica's grassroots, which spawns most dancehall stars, has long had a personal relationship with ganja. From therapeutic to recreational and sacramental roles, this great 'tree of life' has even been said to 'raise the dead'.
Such traditional stories have many times proven to be well advanced of modern science. And according to researchers from Stanford University, Ganja does, in fact, enhance sex and increase sexual frequency.
In 2017, the Journal of Sexual Medicine published the findings of a study titled 'Association Between Marijuana Use and Sexual Frequency in the United States: A Population Based Study'.
Lead researchers Dr Michael Eisenberg and Dr Andrew Sun revealed in the study that "marijuana use is independently associated with increased sexual frequency and does not appear to impair sexual function".
Daily ganja users also reported having 20 per cent more sex than non-ganja users.
The thrills of a ganja-induced coital union are also experienced by women.
Due to the plant's stigmatisation, women are more reserved with their pronouncements of ganja use but do incorporate it into their pre-lovemaking rituals.
A related research conducted at St Louis University in Missouri, USA, looked at the relationship between ganja use prior to sex and sexual function in women, and it determined that women are equally stimulated by the plant's sensual spells.
The research revealed that 68 per cent of the women who admitted to using ganja reported more pleasurable sex. Sixteen per cent had no opinion on the matter, and the remaining 16 per cent said it had a negative effect.
The women who used ganja also reported better-quality orgasms and higher libido and confessed to purposely lighting up prior to sex.
However, not all ganja is created equal. Indica-dominant strains will put you in a more snuggly Luther Vandross-lovemaking mood, while a sativa-dominant strain is said to make you more frisky and less conservative.
Generally, research on marijuana is in its infancy stage due to the plant's illegal status for much of the past century. With global legalisation looming, much more in-depth research is expected in explaining how and why our bodies respond to the effects of ganja.
