Representative Robert Sprague Holds Press Conference About Issue 3

In a press conference Ohio officials announced their opposition to passing Issue 3, and amendment that would legalize personal and medical marijuana use for people 21 and over.

"This creates a monopoly in our states' constitution that's reserved for the rights of citizens of the state, so it creates a marijuana monopoly that has 1,100 retail locations across the state," said Republican Representative Robert Sprague of the 83rd district, "That's more than the number of McDonald's in the state."

Sprague says drug related items, like ResponsibleOhio's "marijuana mascot", present dangers for children. "My 9 and 10 year old little boys, they love superheroes. That's not aimed at a college student, that's aimed at kids," said Sprague, "These marijuana cookies, my daughter might think that an M&M cookie at our house is dessert, then she goes over to my neighbors house and it's laced with marijuana."

Hardin County officials are also concerned with how passing this amendment might affect their law enforcement, based on issues in other states that have already legalized marijuana.

"The state of Colorado is dealing with the problems of legalizing marijuana now, with the enforcement problems it's causing why do we want to duplicate another states' problems?" said Hardin County Sheriff, Keith Everhart.

Officials say they'll be speaking to people across Ohio before the amendment is voted on on November 3rd. "This is just the beginning," said Sprague, "We're going to talk with law enforcement and make sure people are educated, because, quite frankly, when they hear the facts about this issue a lot of people change their mind and they become opposed."
