Testing underway for marijuana breathalyzer to be used by police

Researchers are working to find a way for police to test drivers who could be high behind the wheel.

The legalization of medical marijuana in Oklahoma and loosened marijuana laws around the country are spurring conversation and research on the effects of the drug.

Developers at the University of Pittsburgh used a 3-D printer to make a portable marijuana breathalyzer that could eventually become something for police to use to test drivers. Law enforcement doesn’t have a tool to measure how much THC is in a person’s system.

Researchers say the device has been used on one person and worked but federal regulations forced testing to only be done with a machine blowing the THC.

The device testing on people could see several months pass before federal approval.
