Study: Marijuana users more likely to survive heart attack

After going through millions of medical records and hospital room outcomes, researchers at the University of Colorado have found that people who use marijuana are more likely to survive after being hospitalized with a heart attack.

Before we delve into the details of the study, here are a few alarming facts by the American Heart Association:

1) Heart disease accounts for about 1 in every 3 deaths in the United States.

2) Each day, nearly 2,200 Americans lose their life to cardiovascular diseases – which means 1 death every 40 seconds.

3) More Americans die of cardiovascular diseases each year than those who die of cancer and Chronic Lower Respiratory Disease – combined.

4) In terms of health expenditures and lost productivity, cardiovascular diseases and stroke are estimated at over $316 billion.

5) Nearly 92 million American adults have some kind of cardiovascular disease or are coping with the after-effects of a stroke.

What the study found?

For the study, the researchers analyzed the hospital records of 1,273,897 Acute Myocardial Infarctions (AMI) patients.

In case, you aren’t aware of this term, Acute Myocardial Infarctions (AMI) is a generic word used to denote a heart-related emergency.

After analyzing the records of the said number of AMI patients, the researchers focused on the 3,854 cases among that group who admitted to marijuana use.

The researchers finally found that those who used marijuana had a reduced risk of:
  • Death
  • Shock
  • The need to get a balloon inserted into a blocked artery
“Perhaps the most striking finding of our study is that marijuana use prior to AMI was linked to decreased in-hospital mortality post AMI,” the authors wrote. However, they added that further research is required before drawing conclusions.

The findings of this study actually keep with the inferences made from a previous study conducted in the year 2017. It had also found that marijuana use did not increase the chance of mortality amongst those hospitalized with a heart attack.
