63 per cent rise in drug seizures; this is the drug India is getting 'high' on

From codeine syrups to hashish, take a look at the drug India likes to get intoxicated on.

No matter how illegal they might be, drugs have been and always will be a major threat to our society. 

Gone are the days when people used to rely on alcohol and cigarettes, ganja, heroin, meth are the new highs. 


We all know 70 per cent of Punjab's youth is addicted to drugs, all thanks to the facts and figures released around the release of Udta Punjab but it is not just one state's problem. According to reports, West Bengal, Haryana, Delhi, Odisha, Maharashtra, UP, Gujarat and Rajasthan are intoxicated in their own preferences. 


From codeine to poppy husk, each state is addicted to different substances to get their dose of intoxication. Here are some of the common drugs that are flowing through our nation:
1. Heroin - Snorted and consumed in the form of powder
2. Hashish - A dry form of weed (marijuana), hashish available in the form of thick, dried up resin like form which is smoked like a cigarette
3. Mephedrone - Consumed commonly as tablets
4. Methaqualone - Consumed commonly as tablets
5. Crystal Meth, Ecstasy etc - Available in the form of crystals and powder
6. Poppy Husk - Consumed by oral ingestion and syringe as well
7. Ephedrine - Consumed commonly as tablets
8. Ganja - Available in the form of dried leaves of cannabis plant, commonly known as marijuana
9. Codeine - An opiate to treat cough and diarrhea in the form of syrup that people are getting addicted to.


But, there is one specific drug that most people in India prefer over other drugs, and it is none other than, 'ganja'. Ganja or cannabis is a herb which contains THC (tetrahydrocannabinol), the main psychoactive part of the drug out of other 483 unknown compounds. Mostly consumed by smoking, ganja tops the list of the top 5 illegally traded drugs in India.
