Midlanders' films on gun violence, marijuana use to be shown at festival

The Midland Daily News

Four videos produced by two Midland residents and developed at the Midland Community Television studios will be shown at the American Public Health Association’s Global Public Health Film Festival in Denver.

Dr. Zigmond A. Kozicki and Dr. Stephanie Baiyasi-Kozicki co-produced the videos that cover a range of topics, including gun violence and marijuana use in Michigan.

The movies include:
• Moms Demand Action — Wear Orange Day: The movie interviews two local community activists concerned about gun violence. These activists describe the mission of “MOMS Demand Action for Gun Sense in America” and promoted the June 2, 2016 Gun Violence Awareness/Wear Orange Day.

It will air Monday, Oct. 31.
• Moms Demand Action For Gun Sense in America HSAC: The movie interviews two local community activists concerned about gun violence. These activists describe the mission of “MOMS Demand Action for Gun Sense in America.” The group was created to advocate for stronger laws and policies that will reduce gun violence and save lives. It will air Tuesday, Nov. 1.

• Wanna Marijuana?: This documentary film provides the public with information they can use to decide if they want to support legalization of marijuana in the State of Michigan. It will air Wednesday, Nov. 2.

• Saginaw Rising: This documentary movie utilizes an observational prospective to identify the nature of violence. The movie applies epidemiology theory (the occurrence and distribution of health-related events in a specified population) to explain the ongoing chronic outbreak of violence in 2012 in Saginaw. This movie was originally cast to provide feedback to the people of Saginaw to take action to interrupt the epidemic of violence. It will air Wednesday, Nov. 2.

The American Public Health Association’s 2016 annual meeting will bring together more than 12,000 people from across the U.S. and around the world to network, educate and share experiences. This year the conference is about health equity and ensuring the right to health.
