Scotland to stop prosecuting marijuana users

Starting next month, Scotland police are set to stop prosecuting people found committing petty crimes such as marijuana possession, public urination and petty shoplifting so law enforcement can focus their limited time and resources on more serious criminal offenders, as reported by Evening Times.

Under the new system, police officers will issue new “Recorded Police Warnings” to low-level offenders.

The new warning system is expected to be formally introduced January 11 and will replace a series of adult police warnings that are “used in different ways across the old eight legacy police forces,” as reported by The Herald Scotland.

“This means that officers will not have to spend their time writing standard prosecution reports and can do police work instead,” one source told The Herald.
