Colorado marijuana sales hit new record highs

People spent more than $100 million on marijuana products in Colorado this past August.
“That’s a new record high. And if the trend continues, sales will set another new record next month, and the month after that, and on and on,” writes Anica Padilla at 7News Denver.

Recreational marijuana sales totaled $59.2 million and medical marijuana sales came in at $41.4 million in August, according to sales data released Friday from the Colorado Department of Revenue.

Colorado collected more than $13 million total in taxes, licenses and fees on marijuana in August 2015. That’s up 70 percent from August 2014.

According to The Denver Post:
There are three types of state taxes on recreational marijuana: the standard 2.9 percent sales tax, a 10 percent special marijuana sales tax and a 15 percent excise tax on wholesale marijuana transfers.
Colorado was the first state to legalize recreational marijuana sales on Jan. 1, 2014. The very first month of sales totaled $46.9 million, with $14.7 million coming from recreational sales and $32.2 million from medical sales.
