There is currently no published data or randomized clinical trials to
support the use of CBD for Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder
(ADHD). The research into ADHD and CBD focuses on cannabis, which
contains many compounds other than CBD.
However, anecdotal evidence suggests that CBD relieves anxiety which is common among ADHD sufferers. The fact that only anecdotal evidence is available has not deterred people from trying CBD to help treat some of the symptoms of ADHD.
Why would CBD have the potential to help?
CBD has potential benefits for treating ADHD because it interacts with the endocannabinoid system in the human body. This system has receptors in the brain and the body. CBD is a cannabinoid without any psychoactive effects which interacts with these receptors in the body.
Unlike THC, the cannabinoid that makes people “high”, CBD has a different effect and causes the body to produce more of its own endocannabinoids. The fact that it has an influence on the central nervous system presents the possibility that it could help those ADHD to relax and reduce their anxiety.
What do scientific studies say?
A 2017 study looked at a small group of adults with ADHD who self-medicated with cannabis. The researchers did note a slight improvement in brain function and symptoms. Markers of hyperactivity and impulsivity improved very slightly.
One 2015 study looked at the relationship between ADHD, marijuana use and depression in undergraduate students but the overall results were unclear.
It is only in recent years that researchers have been doing studies to look at the effect of cannabis for neurological conditions. Studies for the effect of CBD on these conditions still need to take place.
The anecdotal evidence does suggest that with CBD may help to reduce anxiety and make sufferers feel more relaxed. However, more research is obviously necessary to find out more about the effect of CBD on ADHD.
ADHD medication requires a prescription and has a number of side-effects including insomnia, poor appetite, mood changes, headaches and dry mouth. CBD oil has been shown to be well-tolerated up to a dosage of 1500mg a day with minimal side effects. If future research does find that it helps to treat ADHD, this could be of great benefit.
What CBD products to use
Unfortunately, there is still no data to indicate factors such as which dosage or products would be appropriate. The lack of industry regulation means that products still vary widely in terms of quality and efficacy. The quantity of CBD in products is often reported as more than a product actually contains.
If you are thinking about trying CBD for ADHD, it is best to do this in collaboration with a medical professional. You also need to make sure you’re using a reputable supplier, such as Greenleaf Farms, where you know exactly what is found in products because the labeling is done correctly. The results from third-party laboratory testing should also be available.
There are numerous ways to use CBD including CBD oils, CBD tinctures, CBD soft gel capsules and CBD cream. Greenleaf Farms supplies all of these products and they are completely legal because they are extracted from hemp which is grown in the rich farmlands of Southern California.
How to use CBD products
There are no guidelines at this stage on how to use CBD to treat ADHD symptoms such as irritability, hyperactivity, and fidgeting. If you’re new to the use of CBD, the best way to start is probably with oral CBD as it is less likely to cause side effects. You can put a few drops of CBD oil under your tongue using a CBD dropper.
You should start off with the smallest dose possible, see how well you tolerate it and gradually increase it so your body has time to get used to it and reduce your risk of side effects.
