Prime Minister Trudeau Should Decriminalize Marijuana ASAP

By Emily Gibson

With Prime Minister Trudeau election, many had thought that marijuana would be decriminalized on a faster basis. The though comes from the fact that Trudeau thinks marijuana should be legal and the fact that he even smoked it at one time. His recent remarks concerning marijuana laws in Canada being still implementable implies that decriminalization is not yet an option even when marijuana legalization can take years.

When Trudeau was, being elected MP many conservatives tried to make a big deal of the fact that he had smoked marijuana, but Canadians still elected him. Later on, Liberals and Conservatives set a minimum sentence for marijuana. Trudeau was one of the Liberals and even though it was a wrong decision, it was a liberal caucus decision, and Trudeau was not yet the leader.

When he was an MP, he opposed both the legalization and decriminalization of marijuana. He particularly stated he had witnessed the effects, and everybody requires all their brain cell to deal with their problems. Some considered this hypocritical since he had used marijuana though in politics most of the things being said are hypocritical.

Canadian did not take the matter lightly and still had support for Trudeau.

During last year’s campaign, he promised to move on a quick note to thelegalization of marijuana.

Four months after theelection, there is still no clear plan on how legalization will take place. Based on the facts that legalization is complicated and takes time, Canadian are still excessing patients
Recent remarks by Trudeau and MP Bill Blair concerning Laws of the country and their applicability not only shows that marijuana decriminalization or legalization is far from being real but even pardons for those arrested is far from happening.

Mr. Blairspecifically noted that pardons are not under consideration and not being contemplatedat present. This brings about the question concerning the PM Integrity since he has smoked marijuana and consider it not legal but he can’t say other people should continue to be criminally charged just formere possession.

Trudeau has made it clear that he supports legalization and not decriminalization but his policy will most probably take years to implement. Laws will have to be passed provincially and federally while an entirely safe, regulated and secure system for selling marijuana will need to be created.

This will take time and in the meantime, Trudeau should extend the generosity accepted to himself by Canada in his political career up to now and decriminalize marijuana.
