Berkeley Brean
Police in Ogden are warning parents about "wax" marijuana they say is showing up in Monroe County.
Some of it looks like shapeless gummy bears -- it has the same
consistency. The wax marijuana comes in a small container so you could
mistake it for lip balm. The point is -- if you look at it, you don't
think it's marijuana and so kids can hide it in plain sight.
Ogden Police Chief Chris Mears says, "These basically are rubberized containers."
Chief Mears showed News10NBC the candy and wax marijuana his department seized.
Berkeley Brean: "Marijuana has been around for a long time. What makes this particularly dangerous?"
Chief Mears: "What makes it dangerous is that it's so
concentrated it's been reported to have some psychoactive properties
causing extreme paranoia."
Spencerport mom Michelle Dick says, "I had no idea about it."
Dick has two young children. Her oldest will be in middle school next
year. We showed her the warning by Ogden police about candy and wax
marijuana.
She says, "I'm very happy they put it out there. I'm going to warn my kids about it."
According to Monroe County's Youth Risk Behavior survey -- which asks
middle and high school students about drugs, sex and violence --
marijuana use among students is going down. The only drug on the
increase is meth -- the report came out Wednesday. Chief Mears says the
drug popped up about six months ago.
They made one arrest and one is
pending. What the chief wants is for parents to recognize these drugs
and turn them in.
"Again, if parents are turning these substances over, we're not looking
to arrest children," says Chief Mears. "We just want to get this stuff
off the streets."
The chief says Spencerport schools found some wax marijuana and turned
it over. Another thing to watch for: The batch of marijuana is
expensive. A small container could cost anywhere from $100 to $200.
The
chief says if someone is guarding something that looks plain -- that's a
red flag.
