Marijuana is Linked to Decreased Cancer Risk
Last year research in Spain suggested that tetrahydrocannabinol
(THC), marijuana’s psychoactive ingredient, kills brain cancer cells.
Study coauthor, Guillermo Velasco of the Department of Biochemistry and
Molecular Biology at Complutense University Madrid, Spain claims that
when THC was applied to cancerous brain tissue, the cancer cells were destroyed while healthy cells were left alone.
Cannabidiol, (CBD), also found in marijuana, apparently does the
same; a pair of scientists from California Pacific Medical Center in San
Francisco demonstrated the cannabinoid’s ability to stop metastasis in many kinds of aggressive cancer.
“It took us about 20 years of research to figure this out, but we are
very excited,” said Pierre Desprez, one of the scientists behind the
discovery, to The Huffington Post. “We want to get started with trials as soon as possible.”
Marijuana Can Help Trigger Brain Cell Growth
In 2005, a study published by The Journal of Clinical Investigation
showed cannabinoids’ ability to promote neurogenesis in the adult
hippocampus, the brain region responsible for many important brain
functions, including mood and memory.
The study authors also cited the anti-anxiety and anti-depressant
effects that accompany the neurogenesis. This explains why users across
California, Colorado, Washington and other marijuana-friendly states
often turn to the herb for a mood boost, instead of pharmaceutical drugs.
Legalization Of Medical Marijuana Has Led to Decreased Teen Use
There seems to be a link between the legalization of marijuana and decreased teen use. This is probably attributed to the fact that legalization also leads to regulation, and as black market channels decrease, teens have less access to marijuana.
Ten states had legalized medical marijuana by 2006; seven of those 10
passed the laws between 1999 and 2006, the years for which the teen-use
data is available for all states.
Eight of the 10 states that had legalized medical marijuana by 2006
saw a decrease in teenage use of marijuana from 1999 to 2006.
Marijuana May Treat Alzheimer’s Disease
Although pot’s reputation for diminishing short-term memory is
documented, it surprisingly may have therapeutic value in treating
Alzheimer’s disease. A 2008 study
in rats showed that the anti-inflammatory effect of a THC-like compound
might slow the progression of the degenerative illness. The compound
may also promote the growth of new cells in aging brains.
Marijuana May Help Control Epileptic Seizures
A study performed by researchers at Virginia Commonwealth University
discovered that ingredients found in natural marijuana play a critical
role in controlling spontaneous seizures in epilepsy. Dr. Robert J.
DeLorenzo, professor of neurology at the VCU School of Medicine, added,
“Although marijuana is illegal in the United States, individuals both
here and abroad report that marijuana has been therapeutic for them in
the treatment of a variety of ailments, including epilepsy.”
Marijuana Can Decrease Anxiety
Medical marijuana users claim
that the drug helps relieve pain and suppress nausea — the two main
reasons it is often used to relieve the side effects of chemotherapy.
In 2010, researchers at Harvard Medical School suggested that these benefits may actually be from reduced anxiety, which would improve the smoker’s mood and act as a sedative in low doses. Beware though, higher doses may increase anxiety and make users paranoid.
